Skype Interviewing Tips

Skype Interviews have become more popular in the past year. It gives the employer the opportunity to interview a potential candidate face-to-face without incurring the travel expenses and time investment of an on-site interview. To most employers, it is both time and cost effective. Following are a few tips to help you ace your Skype Interview:

  • Look into the Camera, Not at the Screen. This will help you maintain eye contact just as you would during an in person interview.
  • Practice Makes Perfect. Do a trial run to ensure that you are comfortable with the technology. Mistakes happen so it’s best to practice with someone beforehand so they can provide feedback.
  • First Impressions are Everything. Ensure that you are surrounded by a neutral background. You want to put your best foot forward so ensure that there is no clutter visible.
  • Avoid Distractions. Shut down other programs on your computer. Ensure your phone is off, make plans for children and dogs. Make it known that you need privacy to anyone that might interrupt.
  • Test Technology. Use the highest-speed internet connection to avoid video issues and lag time. Test your camera and microphone ahead of time to ensure that your equipment is up to par.
  • Plan for Issues. Plug in your laptop so it is completely charged. Keep your phone on hand in case there are issues and a phone interview must be conducted.
  • Enthusiasm is Key. Don’t let your Skype Interview fall flat. Smile and add extra enthusiasm which will translate well on screen to your interviewer.
  • Pay Attention to Lighting. The light source should be in front of you, not from behind you. The best source of light is a diffused light positioned six feet in front of you. Make sure that you are not back lit from a window because it will make you appear like a dark silhouette. Test lighting prior to ensure that it’s the most flattering.
  • Dress to Impress. Avoid wearing patterned clothing that will be distracting on camera. Dress as if you were going on an actual interview – dark colors with a pop of color is highly recommended.
  • Position Yourself Properly. Position the camera slightly higher than normal so that you are captured face-on and not looking down. Sit up straight and do not sit too close to the computer.
  • It’s all About the Details. Your Skype profile is visible to the interviewer so your profile photo and handle should be professional.
